Program
Franz Kafka had been interested in art since his grammar school days. He also left behind a significant collection of drawings, the majority of which were only discovered in 2019. In the exhibition at the VILLA STUCK Museum, this chapter is illuminated using original volumes from Kafka's library as well as original drawings. Andreas Kilcher, who found Kafka's drawings in a safe in Zurich and made them accessible to the public in a magnificent volume, will present the diverse network of relationships between the writer and the visual arts in a lecture.
The lecture offers a foretaste of the exhibition publication, which is expected to be available at the beginning of February. The book combines two reprints of Kafka's stories „In der Strafkolonie“ and „Die Sorge des Hausvaters“, each reprinted from the first edition, with series of contemporary art images and essays by renowned Kafka scholars.
Andreas Kilcher is Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies at ETH Zurich and has held professorships at Princeton and Stanford, among others. His research specialises in German-Jewish literature and culture
