America - Opera by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati

Opera in two parts based on the novel of the same name by Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka's novel fragment „Amerika“, written at the beginning of the 20th century, foreshadowed the great crises of modernity. Left unfinished, it tells the story of Karl Rossmann's nightmarish journey through life to the America of great promises of happiness, which soon proves to be a land of absurd constraints and impossibilities.

The Zurich Opera House is celebrating the genius of Kafka with one of the most elaborate stage productions that the anniversary year has to offer - the music theater „Amerika“, which the Polish-Israeli composer Roman Haubenstock-Ramati composed in the 1960s based on the Kafka novel of the same name. The work has only been performed twice since its premiere, but as a bold musical theater design it is one of the milestones of opera composition in the 20th century and one of the most fascinating and experimental works of musical modernism.

In Haubenstock-Ramati's work, the stages of the Kafka novel combine to form breathtaking mobiles of sound, image, action and light. Is it opera? Drama? Dance theater? Stage installation? A sound spectacle? ... It is Kafka.
