Program
In what ways do the lives and poetics of Franz Kafka and Richard Weiner differ, and how do both authors thematise emotion in their work? We cordially invite you to a lecture by Filip Charvát (Faculty of Arts, Charles University), which you can attend on Tuesday 14 May 2024 at 6 pm in the lower hall of the Institute for Czech Literature of the CAS (Na Florenci 3, Prague 1).
Admission to the lecture is free and without registration.
The planned comparative lecture will begin with a general comparison of the life and poetics of two representatives of Prague Modernism – the German narrator Franz Kafka (1883–1924) and the Czech writer Richard Weiner (1883–1937). The lecture then focuses on the narrower theme of emotion and emotional function in both works by first presenting a theoretical outline of the concept of basic emotions (P. Ekman et al.), which is then applied to the broader work of both authors. Finally, the lecturer will evaluate the different possibilities of thematization of emotions on the example of two selected texts (explicit thematization, symbolic level, descriptions of gestures and facial expressions, etc.).
The lecture series on the reception of Franz Kafka's works is held in cooperation with the Adalbert Stifter Verein, e. V. – Kulturinstitut für die böhmischen Länder, Munich (Germany); Bohemicum, Center for Czech Studies Regensburg (Germany) and the Czech Literary Centre, Prague – Brno (CZ).
