With Uli Pleßmann (acting) & Max Doehlemann (piano)
About an officer, a traveller, a convict and a court case. About a peculiar apparatus. He tortures, murders and writes the judgement into the skin with fine needles. Artful. Deadly. Fascinating and repulsive at the same time. When Kafka wrote the text in 1914, he could only have guessed that he was on the brink of a devastating war and at the beginning of the bloodiest century in history. In retrospect, however, it reads almost as a prediction of these previously unimaginable horrors. Kafka's language creates images that we cannot escape. Images that confront us with our dreams, fears and desires. We shiver and feel how close civilisation and barbarism are. How small a step it can take to become a beast, from perpetrator to victim and victim to perpetrator.
