As Kafka wrote in a letter to his fiancée Felice Bauer in September 1913, he saw Franz Grillparzer as a ‘true blood relative’. ‘The Poor Minstrel’ was one of Kafka's “cult books”, which he read aloud with enthusiasm. But even more than that, he recognised astonishing parallels between Grillparzer's biography and his own life and suffering.
