Kafka, Bugs and Kakania. Getting to know Franz Kafka (1883-1924) on the 100th anniversary of his death

In June 2024, it will be 100 years since the death of Franz Kafka. Not many authors receive as much attention so long after their death as the Prague writer, who did not live to see his 41st birthday and was actually an insurance clerk by profession, who at least made it to the position of „senior assistant“. Wherever you look up „German-language world literature“, Kafka is always there. And the fact that his name has become somewhat proverbial in „kafkaesque“ situations (incidentally: also in English) is something he has in common with no other author. So „people“ know him. Do people know him?

Franz Kafka is a particularly well-known author, but in some ways also a particularly „unwieldy“ one, who is not easy to approach. The seminar therefore aims to provide an approach for all interested parties who do not (yet) see themselves as Kafka experts. His life and work will be examined from various perspectives, such as the fact that Kafka spent the longest period of his short life in „Kakania“, the late Habsburg monarchy, as it was called by his older colleague Robert Musil. The special cultural atmosphere of Prague will play a role and much more - in the special atmosphere of Haus Schlesien, tranquil, culinary and easily accessible.
