Kafka in Quotations: Exhibition with public participation

The literary world of Franz Kafka seems both strange and strangely familiar to us today. In his prose, he captured the challenges of modernity like almost no other author of his time. The powerlessness of the individual in the face of an oversized order, the alienated life in absurd bureaucratic contexts and questionable hierarchies, the lack of empathy even in love relationships, the bizarre independence of perfectly functioning machines and - despite all the hopelessness and despair - humor and comedy are central motifs in his work.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka (1883-1924), the exhibition „Kafka in Quotations“ approaches this complex world in the form of text excerpts. The quotations create a special approach to Kafka's novels, stories and prose miniatures, to his letters and diaries - works that still puzzle us today.

Beyond the great readings, the quotations enable a direct confrontation with Kafka's elegant and filigree figures of speech, with his philosophical aphorisms and pointedly formulated thoughts, which can inspire further thinking or writing.

A wide audience has selected the text passages, which is what makes this exhibition so special. In a process lasting over four weeks, Kafka enthusiasts and interested readers were able to approach Kafka's work at publicly accessible locations (Munich Adult Education Center and Munich City Library) and vote on their favorite quotes. Kafka's current reading public thus shapes the face of this exhibition.
