Program
Franz Kafka has inspired many Czech writers. How do contemporary Czech authors relate to him? How do they interpret his texts? How did he influence them or what irritates them about his work? Which of his methods can no longer be repeated today and why? Renowned authors who represent various forms of contemporary Czech prose – Magdalena Platzová, Viktorie Hanišová and Stanislav Biler – will talk about their relationship to Franz Kafka's work.
In the summer semester 2023/2024, the lecture series „Franz Kafka and Contemporary Czech Authors“ is dedicated to the reception of the works of Franz Kafka (1883–1924), the 100th anniversary of whose death falls this year.
The aim of this series of the Literature Forum (February – June 2024) is to shed light on some aspects of Czech interest in Kafka's work and personality in the (not only) Czech-speaking context from the First World War to the present day. In addition to discussions with contemporary writers, lectures will be held on Kafka and comic culture, Richard Weiner's relationship to Kafka and the resonance of Kafka's work in the unofficial Czech culture of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as with exiled authors of Czech origin.
The series of lectures is organized by: Literárněvědné fórum a Ústav pro českou literaturu AV ČR in cooperation with Adalbert Stifter Verein, e. V., München; Bohemicum – Center for Czech Studies Regensburg and Czech Literary Centre, Prague – Brno.
