If there was one prose writer that the Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen particularly admired, it was his contemporary Franz Kafka. He was inspired by „The Metamorphosis“ and admired its author for his „patient smile“. Shortly after Kafka's death, Van Ostaijen translated four short prose fragments by his hero. He knew even then that he suffered from the same illness. And the parallels do not end there: Van Ostaijen's „The Prison in Heaven“ and Kafka's „A Hunger Artist“ have striking similarities, even though the authors did not know each other's stories. These two writers never met during their lifetimes. Now they meet at the Schaubühne Lindenfels in the Kafka House.

Matthijs de Ridder is a writer. His biography „Paul van Ostaijen. The Poet Who Wanted to Change the World“ (2023) received rave reviews and was nominated for the Flemish literary prize „De Boon“. Kataklump, an adaptation of Paul van Ostaijen's adventures with the German avant-garde, will be published in German translation by Wunderhorn in March.
Anna Eble is a translator, interpreter and editor of the Dutch magazine „Terras“ for international literature. She organizes festivals and workshops in various countries and conducts research into the poetics of translation and reading, including as part of the European Laboratory, which promotes slow and creative reading.
