Franz & Franz: History in Letters

In the spring of 1920, Franz Kafka, who was suffering from tuberculosis, stayed in Merano for a cure. In the same year, the controversial annexation of South Tyrol to Italy took place. Although Kafka attended a rally in favor of autonomy, he remained more of an observer of political events. He devoted himself above all to an intensive correspondence with the Czech journalist Milena Jesenská. At the same time, the Prussian wine merchant Franz Fromm was worried about the loss of his property in Merano. In 1921 Fromm bought the Villa Freischütz, which was his refuge and time capsule. The thoughts of the unequal letter writers Franz & Franz, put down on paper, open up different perspectives on South Tyrol's threshold period after the end of the First World War and bear witness to the „non-simultaneity of the simultaneous“ in the Merano microcosm around 1920.
